Hm. I guess I could try using exiftool and its rather powerful manipulation
of (most likely) createdate to fix this.

Yes, this usually happens when you launch manually xfce4-panel without
session manager, or when it is kicked out session management because of
a bug in its logout plugin. This should be fixed in natty with Xfce 4.8
though.

I can also confirm this behavior from opening files in Nautilus. I
snooped the Totem source code but I didn't see anything suspicious:
maybe this is a bad interaction with glib or GTK and totem?

Indeed, if you launch it from the terminal, the panel is set as one of
its child and therefore is killed when you close the terminal. That's
why the doc recommends using alt+f2.

I like Serge's solution to the problem.
However, I think we should probably bring this question, generically, to

wanted to add that i am running 10.04 now, and the problem is still
there. if i unplug the notebook from AC, and battery level is at 197mAh
(according to /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/state), no message is displayed.
according to /proc/acpi/battery/BAT1/info low battery warning should
happen at 300mAh,
