Just to report that I bumped into this same bug upgrading from 10.04 to
10.10 with a VAIO VGN-FW31ZJ.
After purging the xserver-xorg-video-nouveau package I was able to start
the upgrade (downloading new packages right now). Will see how the
machine behaves when its finished.
With the nvidia-173 package released some day before maverick's release
the problem is solved on my pc, so we can set this bug as 'Fix Released'

currently pressing super key brings up the launcher what will happen

pointer, for a start. Separately, we should figure out how to make the

I've created a separate connection in NetworkManager that has Type set
to 3G (UMTS/HSDPA), in the hope of avoiding fallback to 2G and hence
avoiding this problem. Using this connection today, though, I've had
the same behaviour: I get a message like this:

The device takes ~1 min before showing up in nm-applet, so far so good.
When I try to connect, I get a few error messages from the option driver
option_instat_callback: error -71, then the device seems to disconnect
from the usb bus.

The problem I reported should have been very common. There should have been
more than a few indignant nvidia users whose batteries died. Because it was
just me, I tend to think it was a coincidence involving my battery or
I have two different slices on slicehost.com (great host!), two
different domains. Ubuntu 10.04 on each. I installed Ruby enterprise
edition, mysql, and lots of good stuff on both using aptitude or apt-
get. All was fine in paradise.

I should also add: it's easy to see that issue #7 is a widespread
problem: do a google search for the phrase xrandr: cannot find crtc for
output and you'll see that you get a lot of hits, even if you limit the
search to within the last year.

What I have found helps: Go into Synaptic and re-install hdate-applet, and the

Trying to use SteuerSparErklärung under wine, using unity
(0.2.46-0ubuntu5), no dialogs, e.g. file open, are displayed, rendering
the software impossible to use. If I login with Gnome, the dialogs are
displayed properly.
