It seems that at least one of your package (libwebkitgtk) got corrupted either
on the mirror or during the download to your computer.
I find it strange that the version of libwebkit-1.0-0 that failed to install on
2011-04-18 was 1.3.12-0ubuntu3 because it is superseded since 2011-04-07 by
1.3.13
I have had vlc running on Debian 6 for days on end and have not had this
issue; but I have encountered it on Ubuntu 10.10. Perhaps Ubuntu patches
are causing this?
Also, you can reset swap with: sudo swapoff -a && sudo swapon -a

I had no problems during my 1.1.7 source code tests with the old libusb0
and the libusb1 "compatible" installation on maverick. Other tests
included all major distributions, with no obvious problems.
The source code line that leads to the error you see is

Marco: for clarity, please could you re-check the attached screenshot:

the misaligned highlight has nothing to do with the Launcher (both the

Um... yeah. tty1 and corresponding output (login screen) is shown
briefly (1-2 seconds on my computer) both during the initial loading and
after "Try Ubuntu" is chosen. This isn't a major problem, but it makes
the whole process seem less "smooth".
