After upgrading to 8GB RAM i got the same error (0) and X segfaulted.
According to (1) i switched off the dual channel mode and the problem
disappeared.
So i think this is not - as assumed above - a HW failure but a problem
of the nvidia module which is confused by large RAM in dualchannel mode.

nvidia-* and fglrx need to be migrated to per-architecture
I guess I could add my solution to 2 computers I install Ubuntu dual boot with
Win7 64bit.
I did Acronis Images of all 3 three partitions to a USB HDD. Then I only put
back 2, the puny nuisance 100MB one MS seems to like (And Hide) and the main
Win7 Part- I only gave it 200GBs. That left

I found a Solution:
the problem is related to nvidia-current package.
the package install lib inside /usr/lib but when kernel postinst (any kernel)
searches the nvidia libs inside /usr/lib32
I think /usr/lib and /usr/lib32 is the same thing if you have a 32bit kernel.
So I created a symbolic
For what is worth, I give a +1 to Lachlan Andrew. Moreover, it is so
easy to fix: let the user optionally choose global menu only for
maximized windows, local otherwise. In my humble opinion, it would be
the best of two worlds.
Now I am forced to move the window to touch the upper bar every time
