Still working good - no issues. I've changed/rebooted both nodes and it
takes snapshots, re-syncs, then removes snapshots (at least 30 times
since applying the patch) without a hitch.

Thanks for your attention. Yesterday I found out how to resolve my issue.
After a long period of only upgrading I tried to start up from a live CD,
this time Mint 11. The live CD put wifi on immediatly. After restarting
Ubuntu it kept this status, so I'm happily working again with this PC.
Looking at metacity's change history, I see that 16-capture-before-
unmap.patch was introduced for Unity2D, but caused bug #740387. A gconf
option "capture-before-unmap" was added but this was left on by
default. In metacity version 1:2.30.3-0ubuntu8 it was switched back off
