To me it feels like a Banshee problem.. I have Firefox, Empathy,
Gwibber, Banshee playing something, and sometimes Software Center...
Banshee suddenly stops playing, and boom compiz crashed!! It happens

I fixed this one removing libcanberra-gtk-module. I'm using Kubuntu
11.10 and so I don't use many GTK apps, but Firefox and Google Chrome

Ok, my 2 cents worth, from an new, casual user's perspective. I agree
this is a bug.
History:
I bought my first computer 3 years ago, and struggled along with Vista
for six months, until I was infested with the "conficker worm"
