I ran into a similar situation just now, where my computer (an old Asus
Pundit-R with a Pentium IV) would lock up hard upon inserting a Broadcom
PCMCIA adapter (BCM4318).
Can you try this procedure:
1) sudo apt-get purge broadcom-sta-common broadcom-sta-source
bcmwl-kernel-source b43-fwcutter
Also attaching aplay -l and gnome-control-center with the
libsoundnua.so log output.

If I run the accessdb command on the 32-bit 12.04 machine it core dumps:
$ /usr/sbin/accessdb /packages/local/share/man/index.db
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Doing the same on the 64-bit 10.04 machine produces something intelligible:
$ /usr/sbin/accessdb /packages/local/share/man/index.db
Bug still there on libreoffice 3.5.3 and Ubuntu 12.04.
and this time it seems that the workaround using legacy keyboard configuration
does not work anymore.
As the status of this bug is fix released there is no chance that it
will be reopened unless we do something.

Doing that now (rebooted to get sound to stop working). pulseaudio -k
does not work, and on top of that, I've pressed Ctrl+C to stop
pulseaudio (as described on that page), and it takes a very long time to
stop pulseaudio. I was about to type that it doesn't, but it just...

When compiling boost 1.49 on Ubuntu 11.10 wigh GCC version 4.6.1-9ubuntu3, I
get an internal compiler error. The error happens when the following command is
run in tools/quickbook:

the system says the gnome-screensaver is active, but I have no options
beyond a blank screen and no item in the system settings to adjust it.
the shell command has no options either. If Gnome has been diminished
thre should be other options.
