My laptop does indeed support 5.1, and that is an option in the
Configuration menu in pauvconfig (although I currently have it set for
Analog Stereo Duplex) - that option changed from Surround 5.1 to
Surround 4.0 when I put options snd-hda-intel model=auto in my alsa-

I'm having this, too. It affects multiple computers and multiple apps
(Wine, Chrome, and to some extent Firefox).

I'm afraid the bug still exists in latest upstream linux-image-3.0.0-22-generic
Something broke after version linux-image-2.6.35-28-generic.
So I still need to keep both versions around: first, boot into 2.6.35. It
initalizes FakeRAID hardware properly. Then, reboot into 3.0.0.
