I can confirm that this problem exists with Ubuntu 12.04 up to date as
of today. I don't recall it happening right after upgrading from 11.10,
but after one of the subsequent updates. Unfortunatelly, I neglected
the most important item of noting after which update it occurred.
Without being exact,
I see that this machine was certified with 11.04, can someone with the
machine test with 11.04 again to make sure this is not a hardware
problem?

mountall calls strip_slashes for the device and the mount path. For
mount path, it makes sense. For mounting /dev/sda on something, having
/dev mounted first makes sense, and I guess for that you need
strip_slashes. Perhaps the strip slashes and that part of the dependency
logic should only trigger

Sorry, I didn't give enough details. I did use the v option to verify and got
the following:
No problems found. 526373 free sectors (257.0 MiB) available in 3
segments, the largest of which is 264223 (129.0 MiB) in size.
and with the p command, I got:

Is there any timeline wherein we can expect this fix to hit Precise?

I can confirm the 3.6 kernel does not fix the problem, though I didn't
