I dont know about that as i didnt have this machine prior to ubuntu
12.04. I installed a clean installation on this machine as prior to this
i was running a laptop so the issue didnt arise.

hello silvio,
maybe my workaround will either fit your needs. i created a user based
cronjob which starts a user based anacronjob at a specific time. the
user needs to be in group crontab
$ crontab -l | grep -v ^#
PATH=/usr/local/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/bin:/sbin:/bin
SHELL=/bin/bash
I did a repeat test this AM. I installed and updated 10.04.4, then I
started the dist-upgrade with update-manager -d -c. This time I
actually got 3 borked debconf windows. I hope the attached screenshots
will help.

i have forgotten to mention that if you use a user based cronjob it will be
executed at the specific time anyway. only system based (/etc/cron.daily) jobs
are executed by anacron at random times. e.g.

And the fix is to update to a new libmlx4 version, which is already in
12.10 / Quantal. I'm not sure if there's anything that can be done in
the context of continuing maintenance to 12.04.

Correction, John Goerzen's package source in debian 607028 is new enough to fix
this - I don't have a TNC setup to
test it in reality; but it starts up unlike the current Ubuntu package.
John's package builds from source if I swizzle line 163 of src/Makefile
so that the -lncurses is at the end.
