Thanks for getting back to me - fyi unity_panel_service was not running
when I treid to run Unity from a terminal window. Running find
/var/lib/dpkg/info/ -name \*.list -mtime -3 | sed 's#.list$##;s#.*/##'
gives the following output:

Ok, I decided to add it that package as a dependency for our own .deb
packages (the ones you can download from our website). For the packages
in the debian/ubuntu repositories, it's still open.
