My main problem with symlinks are that we wouldn't be able to access the
original file as the .tar.xz would contain a symlink instead of the file it's
diverting.

I am running xubuntu 12.04, the problem is the same with normal kernel
and lowlatency kernel
I have nvidia drivers and broadcom drivers on the additional drivers

however the command
lpadmin -p HL2270DW -o pdftops-renderer-default=pdftops
fixed the problem
I attached the cups error log as well

I was experiencing problems in ubuntu 12.04 fully updated and seems like
solved with this option in pam_mount.conf.xml:
logout wait=3000 hup=no term=no kill=yes /
