I will get the information Raymond requested later today (don't have
time right now). Daniel, I am not sure why alsa would not be at the
latest version. Synaptic reports alsa-base version is 1.0.25+dfsg-
0ubuntu4 and that the latest version is the same. The alsa-utils
package is 1.0.27.1-1ubuntu

When I install the php5-mcrypt package, it creates a config file
mcrypt.ini in /etc/php5/conf.d which was the old way to do this.
The correct way now is to create entries in
/etc/php5/[apache2|fpm|cli]/conf.d/ with the format 20-mcrypt.ini .

Slight correction: readline generates the sound when Backspace at the
beginning of a line or ^G is pressed, but it only does this by default;
there's no sound if /etc/inputrc has bell-style set to other than
"audible".
The problem is still present testing only with "echo -e '\a'".
