notifyOSD ignores the expire timeout

I don't know if vnc4server is to blame, but:
1. $ sudo apt-get install vnc4server
2. $ vnc4server
3. VNC to the machine on :1
4. Try typing anything that has an h in it!
5. Window is minimised. Whole setup is useless.
Some default setting somewhere is making the entire

Sound stops working
The people trying to figure out why notifications linger at the top of
the screen for way too long and cause new notifications to come in late
and pile up in a chain that can go on for several minutes are not
reading outdated documentation; they are trying to figure out what is
wrong with this
