Ok I figured out the problem. The volume keys on my laptop don't work
after I disconnect my laptop from HDMI. The solution that worked for me
is, I went to system settings -> sound and changed the profile under
hardware tab to "Analog Stereo Duplex"
Now the volume keys on my keyboard work again.

resolution, after looking around I think it could be related to the auto
i915.modeset=0 in the kernel args, but I don't know how to get this

I have had the issue, but in my case it seemed to be caused by some broken
package dependencies.
After resolving them and rebooting, the issue was gone.
Probably you should have a look at the package dependencies, if you can't fix
it with the suggestion above.
