Because it isn't possible. There is no way to fully automate the
decision of what disk your system is supposed to be booting from and
whether grub should be installed there. That is why the information is
stored in grub-pc/install_devices.

I'm seeing this problem on Ubuntu 14.04 trying to install Wine in a box
with nvidia-304-updates driver.

Everything looked fine after the first install, then when you
reinstalled, yes, it appears you wiped out windows. Did you not try
booting from the hard drive after the first install?

Raymond, there are another issue remaining: headphone jack stops working after
sleep.
alsa-info-ok.txt is a dump in case everthing works fine
alsa-info-not-ok.txt is a dumo after sleep where speakers works fine and
headphones jack does not produce any sound.

Like @florisvda in comment #28 I have configured Power Manager settings
to only lock the screen, not suspend, when the lid is closed.
Nonetheless, when I close the lid while the system is running, it is
