An update: I disabled synergy, set the monitor configuration to the
desired format and it worked. Re-enabled synergy and all is happy now.

Ran into this again today.
I understand the desire to set PS1 consistently across users, sessions,
etc - however this makes changing it harder - since instead of setting
it in one place (I was trying to drop it into /etc/profile.d/prompt.sh),
this gets overridden by each user's individual ~/.bashr
Confirmed in Ubuntu 14.04, is there any known workaround?

One more observation that I'll post here as *TENTATIVE*. All clients
are , as I wrote earlier, 12.04 clients. The bug, as described above,
occurs whenever one of the client's fstab entry uses the nfs filesystem:
192.168.1.2:/home /marcato/home nfs
defaults,user,exec,hard,auto,
Seems to fix it for me too, at least from a first check.
