With the update I received today (libcairo2*) the behaviour I described earlier
disappeared.
It is now possible to place icons on both screens/ desktops.
On top of that this update also gave me a staggering speed increase!

installed the 3.13.0-45 kernel packages from trusty-proposed yesterday.

Here's a strace of when not full, i can only find a open with write for
zeitgeist stuff (i didn't know we used zeitgeist) but i somehow doubt
that is making it fail to animate or reboot

Letting you use a phone without unlocking the SIM(s) is deliberate, on
the grounds that it is still as useful as an iPod Touch. If people
expect locking the SIM(s) to lock the phone as a whole, that would be a
security problem, but as far as I know we don't have any evidence of
that.
