1.0) disable any third party packages in /etc/apt/source.list.d/

to remove _all_ the kernels? And/or is there a reason why there is no
active /boot/initrd.img ?
Note this looks like a very old installation, is /boot/initrd.img a

I confirm that it still doesn't work for me either. I did try manually
creating /run/alsa/ but that did not work either. The directory seems to
vanish on reboot... perhaps because /run is created at boot. That would

these black squares around Nein? Because those pretty double quotes
have been there in the German translation of nano since at least 2009.

It was in fact a memory error. There as a bad address, and I believe that
had been the root of many problems with the machine randomly crashing even
before I reinstalled.

was published, a fix for this issue is in 0.0.13ubuntu4, which is built
but not yet published by launchpad. It should appear on the mirrors
shortly. Approximately 30-45minutes time.
