Ok, so I upgraded my Lenovo w510 to Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus and
the problem persists. The fix I provide works, though when changing the
brightness, it is jerky, i.e. it flashes between a low level and the
actual selected level. But once the desired level reached, all is good.

2. go to software-properties->Additional drivers
3. Request drivers to be installed while apt-get is still running from step 1
(in my case propertiaty nvidia driver)

Bluez 5.40 works for me for both Designer keyboard and mouse. At this
time Ubuntu has not packaged it up into a DEB but I was able to build
and install it myself (search for bluez 5.40 to find how to download the
entire large source). I am using Ubuntu 16.04 but a newer kernel made by
Ubuntu
