I tried running the unity8-session on DB as per the steps mentioned in above
doc but process terminated as soon as it launched followed by several respawing

I'm afraid I cannot include the output requested, because I have since
replaced the 14.04 LTS installation that this bug affected with a 16.04
LTS install.
I had been under the mistaken understanding that Catalyst drivers /
fglrx were necessary for my use case, which is why I had installed 14.04

Also for the first time (single user account laptop) had to sign on to
console (ctrl+alt+F1) and (ctrl+alt+f2) because Ubuntu 16.04 login
screen wasn't working due to activating Nvidia 367.44 driver in
`Additional Drivers`
(For those playing at home, the boot failure in comment #25 was because
the m400 firmware preloads the dtb at 0x400300, which was clobbered
by the >16MiB kernel. The latest 4.8 builds are gzipped, so they're
short enough to leave it intact.)

hi, I can observe the same behavior in Ubuntu Trusty, and I have been able to
see the same just today in Debian 8.1.

It's no different than comparing with the 1.1.93-1ubuntu1 except
refreshed the patch, but avoids the diffs from upstream source.
