I've managed to fix this problem on my machine (HP Omen 15 running
Ubuntu 17.04 using codec for Realtek ALC295 sound device). To fix the
problem, I can do the following:
Install alsa-tools if not installed:
sudo apt install alsa-tools
Create and save a script in /usr/local/bin:
#!/bin/bash
hda
I've opened up bug 1691489 to address the mount/fsck race, and have been
able to reproduce it and it looks like the fix i had in mind will work
(more info there).

Unfortunately using right keys for modifiers doesn't work well with
people who use 10 finger typing - they are used to press certain keys
with certain fingers - to speed up their typing, and using wron
I also want to note, that the initial resolution for DP1-1 (after
startx, before i run my display script), is quite random. Most of the
times it's 1920x1080, which is also the initial resolution for DP1-8.
But sometimes it's a smaller (less pixels) resolution.

I would say to try 16.10 or 17.04 if you can, or upgrade the 16.04 kernel.
Sad to say I was never really sure what fixed it for me, one day it was
just better.
I'm not at the machine right now so I can't give you the specifics, but I
doubt if any of the Windows drivers will fix it in Ubuntu.

Just a note: Before trying the 4.4.68 kernel, I've tried 4.12-rc1 by
accident. The bug does not seem to exist in 4.12-rc1 anymore.

Seems to me that simply calling whatever function loads the icon
positions after the rest xfdesktop has finished starting up would solve
most of this. To prevent the position file being corrupted while
starting (as it currently does) the file *should only be written out
