Dont be surprised to get such an issue:
- mixing Debian & Ubuntu: does not follow the same rules
- third parties packages: use ppa-purge to downgrade to genuine versions
- deactivate other ppas
- clean the system via gtkorphan & bleachbit (as root, carefully select options)
- run: sudo dpkg
$ sudo apt-get install fonts-symbola
solves the problem, origin:

therefore the thunderbird package should depend on 'fonts-symbola'.

Sorry for the late reply, sudodus. I repaired my usb sticks with the
solution described above in this bug report: sudo wipefs --all /dev/sdX
and then just format them.

I've just seen this in a 16.10 -> 17.10 upgrade too. I hit enter i think
about 100 times. Eventually the dialog stayed closed.
The upgrade later came with a similar dialog box saying: "Could not
install linux-image-4.13.0-39-generic", later similar for "linux-
firmware"
In the end it reported:
