I ran the live cd from an external harddrive using the Grub2 feature of
booting directly from an iso using a custom grug.cfg on the external
hdd. I.e. I installed grub2 on the external hdd bootsector, customised
/boot/grub/grub.cfg and added the iso to the external hdd.

It doesn't seem to be related to the PCM bug. PCM is not muted and I can
change the volume etc. (Actually, I can not mute the PCM channel...)
I just noticed it has been fixed and I'm eager to try it out. Maybe it helps

Crackling noise from PulseAudio

Binary package hint: pulseaudio
There is a faint crackling noise during sound playback. Killing
pulseaudio (killall pulseaudio) and restarting apps removes the
crackling noise (which is why I suspect pulseaudio).
The noise is independent of cpu or hd load. Explicitly
