Here are the results of some tests run on a Raring desktop and a Precise
server, both updated today.
copying a directory with few large files (18 files - 53GB): no issues
moving the same directory: no issues
copying a directory with many small files (48236 files - 17,1 GB): no issues
moving
OK, this looks interesting.
Transferred another 26678 files, 48,3 GB without issues.
gvfsd-smb memory usage grew from about 3 to 15 Mb, and nautilus' from 10 to
about 50Mb during the copy.
At the end of the copy, I noticed that neither process had released any memory.
So I started a second
I just copied 24.252 files, amounting to 26,4Gb of data from and back to
my 12.04 server using raring 32 bit in virtualbox. Maybe not an example
of rigorous testing, but I had no issues. Raring updated to today's
snapshot.

As suggested by a file-roller developer, I tried to create new archives in the
samba share from other applications. It showed that Nautilus has no problems in
creating new folders and files from templates.
Then, I also tried saving a new file directly from Libreoffice Writer, Calc and
Impress,
I tried saving from The Gimp, Libreoffice and Mozilla applications
directly to /run/user/username/gvfs/share and it worked.
I also installed the Calligra suite and tried saving from the various
Flow, Stage and Sheets applications to the share using their share
browser and it worked.

Now, the only small issue is that the OSD has many more notches than the screen
has actual brightness levels.
This is noticeable only when lowering brightness, though. When raising it, it
is mostly sync'ed correctly.

for compiz, as explained on the Powertop website:

Yes, the [radeon] driver is the xorg one. Intel drivers show that
behaviour too, even if on the powertop website they state that the issue
is now fixed.
Here are the figures for a Dell D630 ATG laptop, Natty stock kernel. The
i915 driver causes 62+ wakeups /sec. with unity/gnome
Well, just tried to install Karmic on the same Vaio VGN-SR21M, and here
are the results.
Wakeups in the range of 20 - 30, while I thought that the 120 - 150 range was
the norm.
It seems to me that the consumption level rised with Maverick, since I also
tested a Lucid server that stays around 20
Testing it on a Sony Vaio VGN-SR21M
Wakeups from idle per second have generally dropped from 150 - 200 to a
50 - 100 range.

No, behaviour in Lucid is completely different.
When you add the files, Brasero gives an error prompt for each file in the
list, then prompts for missing codecs, providing a list of downloadable ones,
gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg, gstreamer0.10-fluendo-mp3, gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly;
(no crashes)
