Hi David,
I found the problem with acpi_backlight=vendor (at least with the kernel
2.6.27-12-generic).
Start with AC adapter pluged in. Everything works. Now disconnect the AC. Try
adjust brightness - it hangs up and the screen slowly will go to very dark with
no ability to be adjusted.

the 2.6.27-7-generic - working for sure.

I have also tried the workaround above with acpi_backlight=vendor - works
perfectly, thank you.
Until it is properly fixed it is a great solution.
