After upgrading to 10.10 I can still reproduce this. Maybe it has
something to do with locales?

I can reproduce this, with 64bit ubuntu 10.04,
$ evince --version
Visualizador de Documentos do GNOME 2.30.3
$ xpdf -v
xpdf version 3.02
Copyright 1996-2007 Glyph Cog, LLC
With poppler-data installed. I think it's probably a font issue,
althougj this is hard to verify.

I had the same problem, and could reproduce pulse weirding itself out
after failing to load the esound module. Removing it from
/etc/pulse/default.pa completely fixed the problem.
Also, pulse wouldn't even start with the computer, and I had to manually
use alsa to get the sound to work. This is

The settings that make the mic work are:
IEC958 on
Capture 1 muted
Capture and Digital anywhere
And with the first Input Source pointing to Mic and the second to Line (both to
mic or both to line fail). The second input source is usually fed back into
Capture 1, and setting it to the
