I made some progress on this:
I downloaded:

Then on page codec-0 there is GPIO section. I enabled checkbox enable[0] and
sound started working.
I have absolutely no idea why this worked but at least I have sound now

I don't use proprietary software on my system, so Nvidia driver shouldn't
cause this lockup. Maybe it can trigger it like "rm -rf" but not cause it.

I plugged my hard drive to another computer with 6GB RAM (instead of
640MB) and was not able to reproduce this bug at all neither with my
usual methods nor with hang.py. I can always easilly reproduce the bug
on 640MB machine in a few seconds.

I can also confirm that this bug is not reproducible on 2.6.28 and
2.6.29-rc1 vanilla kernels.
It means that this problem occured because of Ubuntu kernel patches and
that's why Theodore was not able to reproduce it on his Intrepid machine
with updated vanilla kernels.

Vanilla kernel 2.6.29-rc8 works well for me. So either this problem was
fixed in kernel 2.6.29-rc8, or the problem is caused by Ubuntu kernel
patches.

Debian was the first, Ubuntu is the second. But now it is quite clear
that all distributions will have to accept either using EULA or rebrand
Firefox. If we choose to rebrand maybe the best choice is as Max Rabkin
said to use Iceweasel so that there will be less proliferation.

Is is because we apply patches and distribute modified version of
Firefox. And Mozilla trademark policies are quite restrictive, if you
want to modify browser you have to do as Mozilla says or rebrand the
