Nevermind that, I found it. For future reference: You have to install
the latest build from the Inkscape Trunk PPA
(https://launchpad.net/~inkscape.dev/+archive/trunk). Be careful though,
as these are bleeding edge releases.

I can confirm that the font issue persists on Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS.
Renaming the ~./fonts directory before starting inkscape dramatically
reduces startup time and startup CPU load.

cursor doesn't disappear on one monitor but takes upa corrupted form

Activating Force full screen redraw (buffer swap) on repaint caused a
significant increase in CPU load with regular usage on my system. That's
why I had to go back to deactivating the automatic screen switch
entirely.
In the course of doing so I discovered another bug in

If somebody adds vga=xxx to the kernel command, what happens when a new kernel
is released as an update and they install it?

The Window Selector applet should display the icons of
applications/windows either in combination with text labels or alone.
Such an option would be very useful in small panels or vertical panels

I use Ubuntu 8.04, GMOME 2.22.2, Compiz-Fusion and Emerald.
System-Preferences-Windows do not apply at all, while using Compiz-
Fusion and Emerald, because they only affect Metacity and GTK-Window-
Decorator. So, I have to use emerald-theme-manager to adjust my windows
I, also, can confirm that disabling auto-login fixes the problem. But
this is, obviously, not a solution.
