The described workaround was for Karmic and is not available in Lucid. In Lucid, you need to use the Configuration Editor for key '/desktop/gnome/interface/menus_have_icons'. Just tick the box and all menu's will show the corresponding icons. About the bug itself, I admit I was a bit brief about
