o.k., problem is solved! I poked around in the BIOS/UEFI settings some more and confirmed that my system was indeed booted in UEFI mode. However, there is another BIOS setting in the "Security" section of the BIOS, where "Windows UEFI Firmware Update" can be enabled and disabled. This setting was
