Are we sure this is an nvidia issue? I would assume it's a race
condition because the SSD is so fast.
I also have this issue on an Intel X25-M. I can try Noveau but it's too
slow to use regularly, I think.

Never mind, back to race condition as my only guess.
I just rebooted and I'm stuck with the crappy non-Ambiance theme.

Changed to invalid, something I updated on Maverick in the last 2 days
seems to have fixed the issue.

A visualvm developer got back to me about the issue,

Adding --laf Metal to the command line args in the jvisualvm script
helped.

visualvm (Java) fonts are out of whack. Huge, blocky text is used everywhere.
OK, I haven't seen Ambiance but once since I installed, so it may not be
a race condition.
I still cannot select Ambiance as my theme, instead Gnome is forcing me
to use this very plain Windows 95 looking default.

In Maverick, the visualvm fonts are *huge* and ugly. It's hard to
actually use the app like this.
This did not occur in Lucid. I am using Sun JDK 6 from apt, and will
include a screenshot comparing Eclipse (which works great) and visualvm

I believe it's actually a race condition with encrypted home folders.
I've rebooted 10 times since and *one* time I had the correct theme.
Does Gnome maybe try to read my config before my home is fully mounted?
What's odd is that I still can't go to Appearances and change it to
Ambiance.

I just installed Maverick 10.10 AMD64 Desktop. After the first boot
everything looked great.
I then setup my typical environment, which basically includes installing
a bunch of packages. I didn't change any Appearance options at all.

Of course, I can't speak to the quality of that mirror or anything, it
