I'm sorry - since my last complaint, I have fixed the problem. Just in
case anyone else made the same foolish mistake as me... on the 'Output'
tab in 'Sound Preferences', 'Internal Audio Analog Stereo' needs to be
selected, and under 'Settings for the selected device', 'Connector' has
to be set to
OK, crack of the day had fixed the problem for me, but now suddenly it's
back - no sound from laptop's built-in speakers again. I guess it could
be due to updates I've since installed? I've tried doing the same fix
again, but it hasn't worked this time. Any suggestions?

Thanks, that's fixed it for me too - Compaq Presario CQ42, built-in
speaker and headphone jack both work now.
