Sorry all, this hasn't been high on my list.
Originally I ended up editing the xorg.conf to force the resolution to 1280
x 800, and it was ok.
Had no troubles with upgrading to newer releases till 8.10. Now the video
defaults to a very 'speckly' look. Adding sisfb to /etc/modules has
resolved

Feisty install is only allowing me 800x600 resolution, although the screen is
capable of 1280x800. Ubuntu 6.06 detected it properly, 7.04 isn't. Laptop is
emachines M5405. Video may be 661/741/760 PCI/AGP or 662/761Gx from Silicon
