My original report was on a Mac. I was able to reproduce the issue
consistently at that time. I was never able to reproduce the issue on a
x86 VM. I don't believe a test on an x86 VM answers the question here. I
would leave this incomplete until someone has time to test this on real
hardware,
Note that the deb provided for download on the MySQL site is linked
against libzip1 because it was built for natty whereas precise now
provides only libzip2. In other words, the package provided by MySQL no
longer works out of the box on Ubuntu.
In the meantime, the simple (and risky) workaround:
On my MacBookPro 6,2 the bug is not reproducible on Oneiric. The
keyboard backlight controls work correctly out-of-the-box.

For the record, running gptsync from a live CD won't rescue this
situation because it doesn't understand the partition table and refuses

Public bug reported:
The new (in Oneiric) Choose a picture screen from the installer shows
a live preview from the webcam as well as some pre-defined icons lined
up on a grid.
Expected: Either two columns of icons with less white space around them, or
three columns of icons.
Actual: Appears
Fix confirmed for parted-2.3-6ubuntu2
Thanks for asking, Colin, but this is just a test machine, made for breaking.
Just wanted to try gptsync.

The bug isn't that it needs to have three columns, the bug is that it
looks like it's trying to have three columns. I.e. the excessive white
space makes it look like something in the layout is broken. Just
increasing the padding between the columns would probably be
sufficient.
