YES! "dm-tool lock" produces exact same result.

Also, upon reflection, it would seem that the actual issue is _not_ a
failure to switch to VT8, as I can blindly enter passwd and return to
session. It would seem that the video driver is simply not coming out of
+dpms mode. I will update the title to better reflect that.

that it integrates well and works. Seems to me like it would be a safe

In a fresh/clean install of Xubuntu 18.10, if an unsuspecting user runs
'apt autoremove', it will remove 'cryptsetup' and 'lvm2' making the
system non-bootable at next restart if an encrypted(LUKS+LVM) drive was
selected during the ubiquity installer wizard:
