Thanks for your comments, but I disagree about that, because when
update-manager starts download selected packages the Launcher icon shows
a progress bar for selected packages, not for all available packages,
but the number on it remain the same.
Not sure if it's intentional or not, but I think

When update-manager starts, I can select the icon on the Launcher, but
if I choose to don't install one of the available update the number of
packages that willl be installed is modified only in the update manager
window and not in the Launcher icon.
