Same problem. It worked for a few days, then the problem showed up. No idea
why. Some further pieces of the puzzle:
(1) If you try to choose the akonadi-resource as standard = message: You
cannot use read only resource as standard
(2) If you set read only in the resource to false, it is again
I can reproduce the same phenomenon (kded4 goes wild, has to be killed) in this
way:
* KDE Networkmanager Applet connected to any WLAN, connect to any VPN-Network
(vpnc)
do either
1 disconnect or reconnect the wlan connection when vpn is running
or
2 disconnect the vpn connection
Kded4 goes
Sorry, in my case it is not a Unity Session, it is a normal kde-session.

There ist a functionality which helps in some scenarios described by the
people above. The adressbooks which are used in kmail are not set in
kmail/kadressbook/akonadi like expected but in Personal Information in
systemsettings. There you can set which contact-ressources are used
generally and

milestone: none → ubuntu-10.04.1, none → ubuntu-10.04.2 , milestone:

for a fix. OO wrote For a fix in 3.2 in kubuntu
or mandriva, please file an issue to the distributors who compile OOo with KDE4
support enabled.
