I'm here to report a similar issue. But what distinguishes my case from all of you is that I formatted 16.04 straight from live media. I never upgraded from 14.04. I'm getting this: $ sudo apt-get upgrade Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information.

Thanks for the clarification, psusi. After aborting the incomplete installation procedure, upon reboot 16.04 booted just fine and the only other O/S on my SSD was Windows 7, all of which is perfectly accessible now, even with an EFI mode installation (that could have been BIOS mode instead). --
