I have attempted to reproduce the problem where Grub cannot be installed
on the root filesystem of the new Ubuntu instance. I installed a first
instance on a new disk. The installer proceeded with the installation of
Grub. This consists of the MBR (first sector on the disk) which invokes
the grub
Reproducing the problem:
I used ubuntu-8.04.1-alternate-amd64.iso hardy 8.04 LTS. Note that the Live CD
has a different user interface and the reported issues do not apply. I also
tested with Intrepid 8.10.
I was able to reproduce some of the claims mentioned above. I found that are 3
steps
Requirements for hostname are as follow:
ASCII letters 'a' through 'z' (case-insensitive), the digits '0' through '9'
and the hyphen. Hostname labels cannot begin or end with a hyphen. No other
symbols, punctuation characters, or blank spaces are permitted. The length is
between 1 and 63
