Finally, although it is much less obvious, the problem persists with
metacity.

I've the same problem with this configuration :
* gnome-shell 3.6.1-0ubuntu1
* mutter 3.6.1-0ubuntu1
* NVIDIA Corporation GT216 [GeForce GT 220]
* Drivers 304.51.really.304.43-0ubuntu1
I have not tested the beta drivers, but the problem disappeared when I
replaced my window manager by metacity.
It's a good thing to have the latest version in Lucid, but for now, it
would be better to have a backport in Karmic...

You
Yes, the bug is still present with Ubuntu 8.10 and Nautilus 2.24.1 /
gvfs 1.0.2-0ubuntu2, and it's easy to reproduce. If you have a ssh
access to a server with a ftpd (Debian's proftpd 1.3.1-17 in my case),
you can try these commands :
mkdir test1 = with a space at the beginning
mkdir -p
You are right. The upgrade from Gutsy seems to have a problem and I've
to apt-get --remove purge pidgin pidgin-data and reinstall them after
that to fix the problem.

Nothing related to my previous problem, but I find somewhat strange that
Nautilus checks for VIDEO_TS, AUDIO_TS, SVCD, VCD, BDAV... directories
while connected on a FTP server.
