I've solved it I found that the bug didn't exit in a new account so I renamed .mozilla to .mozilla.old and simlar for the config dirs of the other browsers affected i.e. Galeon and epiphany then I tested them and they work fine, so the problem is in all that old cruft from way back, lost every
