OK added ppa sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa and installed module via synaptic linux-alsa-driver-modules-2.6.32-22-generic via synaptic (NB There was no previously installed version of this module on my machine). After a re-boot the system seems fine. Excellent job.
