After some googling around, in the end I ended up doing this:
sudo apt install gnome-calculator
sudo snap remove gnome-calculator
And now both my keyboard calculator shortcut works as well as the
calculator is no longer transparent. I have no idea what snap even is.

Thanks Christian.
Sadly, I don't care to create and spin up KVM instances from a command
line, I prefer (as I presume most people do) to use virt-manager.
When I set dynamic_ownership = 0, I am unable to boot due to a
permission denied error:
Error starting domain: internal error: process exited
This bug also affects redis-server 5:4.0.9-1 under Ubuntu 18.04.1.

When writing its output file, ufraw segfaults. This happens both for
jpg and png (and then I stopped testing different file formats). Most
of the time the file appears to be complete. Sometimes it is signaled
as corrupt by a file viewer.
