I can confirm the bug exactly as described. However my .mkv files have mpeg 1
layer 2 sound (stereo, 128 kbps, 48000 Hz). Video is H264.
When the file is .mp4 with video H.264 / AVC and sound MPEG-4 AAC audio,
there's no problem.
Also I have noticed that in order to thumbnail the troublesome
unfortunately my machine died. i think i lost a controller or some other
mb issue. my drives are still fine. when i get a new system, i will try
again and run the apport command.

Eventually I was able to get it to work.
After several failed tries, the drive was not visible in nautilus, but
was still visible in usb-creator. This was not the case in previous

Even if that were the case, there doesn't seem to be a way to modify the
countdown at all, save disabling it altogether via gconf. That is
unacceptable in my opinion. A 5 second delay would be useful in case of
a mistake, but since you can't configure it, it is just plain annoying.

I believe this has to do with the VBRI headers in many mp3 files today.
I installed mp3diags and had it strip out the VBRI header and replace it
with the Xing headers and now the length is fine. Just thought I'd

I got the exact same problem, could boot on one of my old kernels but not the
newly installed.
I did an update to Karmic from Jaunty with aptitude and changed the
/etc/apt/sources.list to use Karmic insted.
Can I solve this by hand? I really like to try the 2.6.31 kernel from

Ok, this is a bit embarassing, but I have solved my problems.
I went to vlc preferences and under advanced settings I went to
audio - output modules - ALSA
and chose the device I want (hw0:0)
This solved the problem for me and I am able to reproduce the 'bug' by
setting the choice back to

Disregard my previous comment about staying in Gnome doesn't exhibit the
problem. It definitely does.
I did, however, find that it doesn't happen when forcing a reboot
instead of using the menu in Gnome to reboot. If I do a 'sudo reboot',

Seeing someone with a fellow problem I felt I must share my findings seeing
that I had the same issue, the result for me was to disable VM ware whenever I

The workaround I used on Intrepid seems to work fine in Jaunty as well.
(I didn't check if the new version of nm works or not -- I NEED my
wireless connection to work when I get to school.) Just install the
0.6.6 packages from Hardy one at a time with gdebi in the following
order:
This just happened (with a single mail source (Hotmail)).
I clicked on Close on the mail notification dialog, pidgin hung for a
few seconds, then crashed.
System is Jaunty with all packages updated, Pidgin is 2.5.5.

I can confirm this happens on 2 different PCs with Nvidia cards.
One is a Core 2 Duo with a 8600GT and the other is an Athlon 64 with an
6600LE.
The common factor is they both run amd64 Jaunty, all packages up-to-
date.
