Kubuntu has kgrubeditor installed by default.
Although it would be fun if my software(startupmanager) was default in ubuntu,
it might not be the best thing since ubuntu has made changes in recent versions

Ah, the mystery is solved. That version is indeed supposed to output the
'user requested shutdown' text at that time, now I wont go insane :)
To your problem: Yes that version does some stupid things which can
cause the crash you have experienced. Ubuntu dont really update packages

Have you been able to test it on intrepid yet?

When you press the ok button, the dialog does not disappear and then sum hangs.
Is that correct?

[Hardy] startupmanager-1.9.10-2 hangs at Performing
I am not sure if I understand this correctly, but sum is not supposed to do
anything with the automagic part of menu.lst.
In fact, sum calls update-grub to finalize any changes when the app is closed.
It would be nice if you could provide an unmodified menu.lst and one that has
been changed by
Very strange, since those are the commands sum use to install/change usplash

That it should fail to change other settings is even more weird.

Then try changing some settings
