Changing status to confirmed and adding the tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'
as suggested by Joseph. Upgrading to the 3.8-rc7 kernel seemed to solve
the issue... no issues showed up after numerous tests.

I'm currently running the latest kernel version 3.8.0-030800rc7-generic
as you suggested Joseph. I will continue to test for a couple of days
since the issue happens sporadically... I'll post any updates soon. So
far all is good:

I think this bug is the same problem I have with adding my eclipse start
script to the launcher. I have eclipse extracted in a local home folder,
and I created a simple bash script which just goes to that directory
(via 'cd') and runs the executable. Running this from any console works

Although the original report for this bug only mentions 32-bit, this bug
also affects 64-bit install as is mentioned in post #15.

BanjoBoy's workaround does the trick until a fix is released. This is

I would assume this bug's status should be In Progress since we know what
causes the problem (not including the dbe module in /etc/X11/xorg.conf by
default), and adding the module manually solves the problem in all known cases.
Now all that is needed is for someone to decide what happens next
