It does work like that in 2.25, so you just have to hang in there for
the next version :)

I think Bryan is into something. If I understood correctly, in past
versions, you could hide the notes by clicking the desktop background;
as of 2.25.x, it changed to hide by clicking the applet (clicking the
applet now toggle the notes). But Ubuntu Intrepid shipped with 2.24,
which I guess is
