After doing what I described in post #17 (which got the mic working) I updated again to the latest alsa-base (1.0.20+dfsg-1ubuntu5) and alsa- utils((1.0.20-2ubuntu6) and the mic has kept working. I suppose that the walkthrough in post #7 has to be done before updating? -- dell xps m1330
