Today's update/build (2009-07-15) fixed the problem. After installing
today's updates and a subsequent reboot the resolution went back to
normal. Afterwards installed current build to confirm, the resolution is
fine here as well. I suspect this is due to the updated kernel image
I just did a fresh install of Ubuntu 9.04
(ubuntu-9.04-alternate-i386.iso). While this installation still comes
with an xorg.conf the file is empty. Display Preferences detects the
monitor as Samsung 22, the correct resolution is selected (1680x1050).

This is a clean install of Ubuntu karmic, meaning that I have done no
modifications to any configuration files. As such, there is no

@Alexia: I guess the justification for this decision is, that, according
to the release schedule
(https://wiki.ubuntu.com/IntrepidReleaseSchedule), Intrepid is past
final freeze now. Since this is neither a security problem nor a release
critical bug it's sadly not going to be in 8.10.
While I
+1 for enabling the device out-of-the-box. I'll probably reconfigure my
setup for full functionality later on, but I'd rather have partial
functionality directly after installation than none at all.

I reinstalled Intrepid using the current NetInst. In this case the tablet does
not work _at all_ after installation. Without knowledge of this bug-report I
would most likely suspect Ubuntu wasn't supporting tablets.
Functionality (of the stylus) can be restored like Caleb suggested, but how
I just upgraded to kernel 2.6.27-7.10 (+wacom-tools 1:0.8.1.4-0ubuntu2).
Tablet did not lose functionality as with previous kernel updates, which
is probably a good sign. Will do a clean installation of Intrepid now
(NetInst).

@Bryce: I think the problem indeed occured last after an upgrade. So far
it hasn't happened again and I haven't been able to reproduce it on
purpose. Not quite sure, but i think it also happened once when
switching between 8.04.1 and Intrepid (dual-boot), after I tried to
install fglrx on 8.04.

I was able to get the tablet working by rebuilding the kernel module,
using the current beta sources from the Linux Wacom Project
(linuxwacom-0.8.1-4). This includes pressure sensitivity in GIMP (You

This screenshot was taken almost at the same time as the image with the

I can confirm this problem with a fresh install of Intrepid alpha-5
(amd64, NetInst), using a Wacom Bamboo Fun Medium. Moving the pointer
works out-of-the-box, touching the pad causes the mouse pointer to
freeze. Adding the wacom-InputDevice(s) to xorg.conf (see attached file)
removes the freeze,
